The Irish Hare and Easter Origins

The Irish hare

The Irish hare is unique to the island of Ireland and is arguably the country's oldest surviving mammal. It has been present on the island since before the last ice age, which ended around 10,000 years ago.
Revered and celebrated in Celtic lore for centuries, The lunar hare is seen as carrying an egg, symbolically heralding the new cycle of life that comes with the spring. For ancient communities that had struggled to survive the winter with limited food reserves, eggs were often the first of nature’s bounty to save them from starvation. No wonder then that the hare was revered as a symbol of life and endowed with magical powers.
Irish hares only have about 2 babies in every litter. Unlike rabbits, hares are born fully furred and with their eyes open. Unfortunately, The numbers of these noble animals have declined dramatically in the last three decades. People who live in rural areas report that hare numbers are only a fraction of what they once were. With little protection in law, this unique species remains endangered and is now locally extinct in some areas.

Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy End of Innocence!

And that was the end of his Innocence!

I remember very clearly the night I shattered my son's belief in two ( or more) great fairy tales or legends.

I crept into his room at night to put some money under his pillow in exchange for a tooth that he had lost earlier that day.

Unfortunately, he woke up!

When he realized what I was doing, he thought for a second and said, 

"Does that mean there's no Easter Bunny?"

And that was the end of his Innocence!

I still feel guilty all these years later. Maybe this site is my feeble attempt to restore some of the magic of Easter???

The legend of the Tooth Fairy is about a fairy that gives a child money or gifts in exchange for a baby tooth that has has fallen out. Children typically place the tooth under their pillow at night. The fairy is said to take the tooth from under the pillow and replace it with money once they have fallen asleep.

The third and final stage is the butterfly, representing His raising from the dead in a glorified body and peace.

 We love to decorate Easter eggs. Does that sound typical? Well we don't decorate hard boiled eggs, we decorate sugar cookie eggs. These cookies are bound to make any egg hunt fun. At least a lot better tasting than a hard boiled egg!

An Easter Egg hunt is a wonderful game for adults to organize for children.  Years ago it was something that parents did in their downstairs rooms, nowadays it the Easter Egg Hunt has evolved into an outdoor event for the whole neighbourhood.

Organization plus the greater expanse has created more creative opportunities both for the egg hiding places and the clues to locate the chocolate treasure.  If you are the organizer try to make it as fun as possible, the secret is to keep them them moving and keep them guessing.

Another twist for your Easter egg hunt is to use bunny footprints to give the children clues where to look for the eggs.

 Special Easter egg hunt.  Try sprinkling talc on the wooden floor, then using the bunny footprints, they created a trail in the talcum powder.

Place carrots at strategic points, but also gnaw them to look like the rabbits had been there.  One neat touch is to leave a spilt saucer of milk in the kitchen.

The Belgian chocolate producer Guylian made this chocolate egg with at least 50,000 bars [amounting to some 1950 kg of chocolate in total] on behalf of the city of St. Niklaas, Belgium. The egg measured 8.32 metres high. Apparently twenty-six craftsman worked altogether 525 hours to build the egg.

After displaying the egg in the open air for a week, and in all weather conditions, Will and Guy suspect that it is unlikely to taste very good.

For many children Easter wouldn't be the same without chocolate eggs. However, those eggs generate around 3,000 tonnes of waste just from their packaging alone.

Peter Carl Fabergé original name Carl Gustavovich Fabergé [1846 - 1920] was a Russian jeweller, best known for the famous Fabergé eggs, made in the style of genuine Easter eggs, but using precious metals and gemstones rather than more mundane materials, each egg is about 5 inches tall and depicts a different event or theme in Russia's history.

He was commissioned to create the first egg for the twentieth wedding anniversary of Tsar Alexander III and his wife Maria Feodorovna, of Russia, in 1885.  Every subsequent Easter, another egg was made for Maria as a gift from her husband.  After the passing of Alexander III, his son took up the tradition presenting his wife and his mother with their own custom Fabergé egg every Easter.  In all, 50 eggs were commissioned; to this day eight are still missing.

This is the Coronation Egg, which features the coach that Empress Alexandra rode into Moscow in 1897.

Hot Cross Buns History

Dating back to medieval times, the buns were traditionally eaten on Good Friday, but they are now popular all around the Easter season.  These sweet treats, fragrant with fruit and spices, are marked with a cross, either slashed into the dough before baking, or drizzled on in icing afterwards.  The history of hot cross buns dates far back to the pre-Christian era. It is thought that they are descendants of the small cakes offered to Eostre, the goddess of spring.  They may have been marked with a cross even in ancient times, to represent the four quarters of the moon. In later centuries the church, unable to stamp out ancient pagan traditions, decided instead to "Christianize" the buns by associating the cross with that of Jesus.

Paschal bread, made in a round shape, is very popular in Eastern Europe [in Russia it is known as paska.]

The German Easter loaf is Osterstollen and in the Netherlands people eat a sweet bread filled with raisins and currants called paasbrod.
